This page brings together practical support for MIT students, including study support, campus services, school rules, safety information, and useful guidance for living in Sydney.
Student Support
MIT’s public student information covers practical services such as library access, printing, certificate replacement, lost and found, and reception support. These are grouped here into a clearer student-facing overview.
The student handbook says the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts Library is available on Level 2, with paid membership for students.
Printing and photocopying are available at reception, with separate black and white and colour rates listed in the handbook.
Students who complete a course receive a certificate, and replacement certificates can be requested for a fee if lost.
Reception is the main place for lost and found, urgent telephone use, and administrative requests such as class or holiday change forms.
Course Progress Support
MIT states that course progress is checked regularly, and teachers assess language skills through class participation, homework, tests, interviews and group activities.
If a student is not making satisfactory progress, the handbook says the school may provide help such as learning contracts, individual sessions, and extra tasks targeting weaker areas before any formal reporting step.
New students complete entry checks in reading, listening, writing and speaking during orientation.
The handbook describes weekly progress testing and a term test every 5 weeks.
Teachers provide guidance on strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement.
Students can request class or schedule changes, subject to school review and timing conditions.
School Rules
The student handbook includes school rules covering classroom behaviour, English-only use in class, smoking, mobile phones, cleanliness, vandalism, and personal responsibility for valuables.
Students are expected to use English during class hours. Repeated use of another language may lead to a meeting with the Director of Studies.
Students are expected to participate, avoid disruptive behaviour, and treat teachers and classmates respectfully.
Phones should be turned off or silent in class, and students are asked to look after valuables themselves.
Students are asked to help keep shared facilities clean and avoid damage to school property.
Living in Sydney
MIT’s published student information also includes practical advice on safety, sun protection, transport and getting around Sydney.
The handbook advises students to use sunglasses, hats and sunscreen when outside during the day in Australia.
Students are advised to use an Adult Opal card for buses, trains, metro, light rail and ferries in New South Wales.
The handbook reminds students to be careful when walking around at night in Sydney.
Students are directed to Fair Work Ombudsman information for legal and workplace rights guidance.
